Introduction
I am proud to announce that I have been invited to join the inaugural Board of Directors for South Asians in Sports (SAIS), an organization for which I have been a proud member the past 7 years. A career journey for anyone hopefully includes support from those who understand to some degree the challenges you are facing but also are privy to the exciting opportunities that exist for you as well. That is SAIS in a nutshell. And this announcement is hopefully not seen as relevant only for other South Asians. The announcement is for everyone else involved in sports business who want to achieve success in sports and can learn about opportunities working with South Asians, as well as opportunities targeting the growing South Asian population in the U.S. (and Canada) and the surging Indian sports market as well. (you may have seen the recent news about Nike’s design collaboration kicking off in the country.)
Even after almost 15 years doing the Sports Doing Good newsletter, I do come across initiatives that are surprising, whether for their creativity and/or the magnitude of the success of the effort. A perfect example of that comes in this week’s issue with the story, “Miracle League fosters development of baseball fields where people with disabilities can enjoy the game,” published by the SportsBusiness Journal. The Miracle League is a “nationwide organization (that) has been making magic happen by providing an opportunity for people with disabilities, about 70% of whom are children, to come together, make friends and oh yes, play a little baseball,” for the past 25 years. This is amazing. While I have seen stories about an isolated effort to better include those with disabilities in sports, I was not aware of the huge effort by Miracle League that has “spread out across all 50 states as well as Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and Puerto Rico, that serve 450,000 people per year,” and has attracted participation from all 30 MLB teams. Congratulations to a definite game changer, Diane Alford, and her amazing team. I look forward to finding ways to support the organization and broader effort.

Our Website
More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.
Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility, and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.
We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
