Introduction: Sorry for the late delivery today of the Sports Doing Good newsletter. Blame Caitlin Clark!! Another great game between Iowa and Nebraska in the conference championship. Had to watch it all the way through overtime.

The article I want to highlight this week is a profile by Dan Pompei in The Athletic of NFL Hall of Famer and Minnesota Supreme Court justice, Mr. Alan Page. I have always really admired elite scholar athletes, partly because I always felt that we as individuals were obligated to do well in school; sports, while great, were optional. For someone to spend much of their time becoming great learners and great athletes just resonates with me.

Page was not only a terrific NFL player, but he was also a leader amongst the players when they were fighting for their rights to become free agents. For younger people, free agency feels like a birthright. For decades, however, players were restricted in how much money they could make and where they could play. Page was part of the group that fought against that. According to Page, “We were still in the middle of the civil rights struggle. We were talking about freedom as football players. The spirit of the message was fitting.”

One of the things that really impresses me about Page and the few that are like him, is his steadfastness to principles and doing the right thing, while being flexible in his ways upon reflection that maybe a change in approach would be the right way to go. Many of his teammates and fellow NFL players saw that in action over the years.

At age 78, Page is still active in mind, body and spirit. The article starts with him visiting one of the two middle schools named in his honor – now that’s saying something – and standing in front of young people who, like him, have goals and dreams and may need some encouragement. Loathe to give autographs in the past, he does so willingly now as he sees the wonderful reaction of the kids. Principled and professional to this day. Kudos to Mr. Page.
