Introduction: We are seeing a welcome avalanche of attention to women’s sports these days. Could be an example of a 30-year effort finding success “overnight.” Either way, the athletes and the sports themselves are being elevated in terms of our awareness (and financially), and that is what matters.

Of course, the importance of everyone, including girls and women, playing sports has roots in the development of societies overall. Impact girls and women, especially, and the whole community benefits. That was the foundation of Nobel Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s effort with Grameen Bank, whose pioneering efforts in the area of microcredit and microfinance changed countless lives and communities. (Today, more than 95% of the bank’s members are women.) Fighting poverty and lifting up families was found to happen more often when women received the loans.

There are many wonderful non-profits also who are working to “lift up” communities, often through the introduction of sport and concepts of healthy living. One of the stories we present this week speaks to that. In “How basketball brought female empowerment to rural Rwanda,” written by Mark Fainaru-Wada and William Weinbaum for ESPN, we are introduced to women in rural Rwanda and their experience with Boston-based nonprofit Shooting Touch. In the article, “the women say their status has slowly shifted in the 12 years since Shooting Touch poured the cement on its first basketball court in Rwanda.” (I strongly encourage you to watch the compelling 8-minute video that comes with the article.)

As someone who is married to a global health physician and policy maker, I see and hear on a daily basis the enormous effort that takes place to effectuate change in communities who often have limited access to basic resources. They also sometimes are also slow to move when it comes to the equal treatment of girls and women. (Yes, I know, that is still the case in parts of our country.) Sports can and do help. Turning upside down the “Shut-up and dribble,” idea, it seems great non-profits understand the true power of sport, that of an engine or vehicle for change in which not only does someone benefit greatly from playing sports, but they also improve the lot of their family and community as well. It is a long journey, but certainly one worth taking and one that hopefully results in another “overnight success.”
