Introduction
Over the past 10+ years I have sourced articles from at least 100 different places, very likely a lot more. What has been great about doing the newsletter during that time is seeing the variety of sources providing the stories featured in the newsletter (including coincidentally, Variety Magazine) It is refreshing to see non-sports entities have such an important presence in the newsletter as Sports/Doing/Good does not belong only to those who cover sports on a daily basis. They are important entities, of course, but the non-endemic sources show that interest in these stories transcends sports, they include topics such as: perseverance, overcoming the odds, sisterhood/brotherhood, diversity/equity/inclusion (featured since day 1 of the newsletter), entrepreneurship, personal development, and community support, amongst other inspirational and motivational topics. And at their core, all of these stories are informative.

For me, there is no media outlet that has been a better source of informative news and analysis than 60 Minutes, and that was true long before I became a card-carrying member of AARP. Even all the way back to college, watching 60 Minutes was always educational and many times, fun. I don’t remember there being too many sports stories, but I am sure there were a few, and all were certainly handled with the incredible skill that is the hallmark of the program.

Another hallmark of 60 Minutes is featuring stories that are either not covered in the detail that it can provide, or not covered at all by the major press in the United States. For example, in 2017, the program did a great piece on Shohei Ohtani, the transcendent baseball player from Japan, before he had come to the U.S. The idea of a two-way player of that level was, really, hard to believe. Such a player had not been seen since Babe Ruth. Could it really happen again? 60 Minutes gave a peek at the man who has shown us it certainly can. The journalist doing the story was L. Jon Wertheim.

Wertheim is familiar to readers of Sports Illustrated and his great books over the past 25 years. His presence at 60 Minutes was not hailed as the start of a new era in sports at the program (at least I did not see it.) But it did give me hope that there would be a few more stories combining the best of two worlds I cared about – great storytelling and sports. And this week we have two such 60 Minutes/Jon Wertheim stories. You will see them featured in our Video/Podcast section. Both stories deal with subjects that even the most hardcore sports fans likely did not know about, and are yes, informative, fun, and uplifting. I look forward to featuring more such stories in the future.

Our Website

More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.

Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility, and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.

We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
