Introduction: This week I want to highlight not one, but two stories from this collection of, you guessed it, “good” stories. Each story involves a young, star athlete, who is doing great things early in their career. One athlete you surely know, Caitlin Clark; the other, Fnu Nidunjianzan, you don’t, unless you go to Princeton University and/or are REALLY into tennis.

We’ll start with Clark. The University of Iowa superstar broke the college record for points scored by a woman last week. (Except she didn’t, since Lynette Woodard, set the real record of 3,649. Clark will eventually eclipse that as well, but let’s make sure to give Woodard her flowers.) Clark is sensational. From the first time I saw her three years ago, she became “must see TV.” Yes, a woman in sports can hold such acclaim and many are (Coco Gauff, Sydney McLaughlin, Katie Ledecky). But to me, Clark is special. Why? Well, I love basketball. And I love athletes who make/keep sports fun. Clark is giving us spectacle to wonder at, whether hitting “logo 3’s” or dishing the rock for a sweet dime. (sorry if that was too much jargon!) We have a couple of months more of seeing Clark at the collegiate level as she is sure to go pro and infuse an already trending WNBA another superstar to follow.

Fnu Nidunjianzan, aka Top, is from Tibet. Yes, Tibet. (That is a first for Sports Doing Good). And his name is not Fnu – “First Name Unknown” – which, according to the great piece by Dana O’Neil in The Athletic, is “how Tibetans, who don’t follow traditional first name/surname structure, identify themselves in order to fill out pesky documents, such as U.S. visas.” (Reminds me of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s character in “In the Heights,” whose name Usnavy was given to him by his father after seeing it written on the side of a ship.”)

Top’s story is pretty remarkable for several reasons, and I hope you take the time to read about him and maybe even check out one of his matches at Princeton or on the pro tour. Top and Clark remind me of the power of sport to not just change one athlete’s life, but also that of family, friends, community and society. We are just getting started with these two athletes and am sure I will have occasion to feature them again in Sports Doing Good.
