Introduction: As we come upon another New Year (Happy New Year to you all by the way), I want to thank everyone for supporting me by being subscribers to the newsletter, occasional content contributors to the newsletter, and for being those who do things to make the sports and sports business worlds better. Sports is big business, no doubt. But I hope we never lose the passion for the essence of sport, whether individual or team sport. It is about challenging oneself and each other to be better, and it is about having fun, getting to escape from our daily work and school obligations, whether we are playing the sport or watching it at the youth, high school, college or professional levels.

A new year is also an opportunity for new beginnings and new efforts. A new chapter, if you will. It can be a new chapter in the same book, or a new book. Why not? We are presented with challenges and opportunities daily. Some we have to confront and overcome; others are ones that may be what we have been hoping for all of our lives.

Out of the great stories this week, the one I want to highlight involves one of my favorite sports personalities, Hubie Brown. While I don’t go searching for stories that involve people, places and things I know, or am a fan of, it is fun when it happens, and it happened this week with NBA legend Hubie Brown.

Three excerpts from the article by Richard Deitsch of The Athletic capture my fondness for Hubie and are relevant as we head into the New Year: “He is the personification of adaptation;” “he personifies not having occupational limits;” and “Hubie is an incredible teammate.” And if you are a basketball fan, maybe nothing captures his breadth of experience and excellence as this rundown of his NBA career: “Brown coached Kareem and Oscar, coached against Kobe and LeBron, and now calls games featuring Giannis and Wembanyama.” In my book, Hubie is in any basketball GOAT discussion.

So, as we head into 2024, I wish you all the best, and when things aren’t going perfectly – that will be true for ALL of us – I hope you find the internal strength and have outside support to get by the tough times and that you can adapt, exceed any limits, and be the best teammate possible.

Please continue to send along your stories. You’re both our audience and best source of stories.
