Introduction: I am starting off with the link to an event taking place this evening, Monday, in NYC. If you can make it, please do, as it is sure to be an informative and inspiring discussion regarding leadership in sports, specifically women who are moving the needle in that world. Here is the link to “Changing the Game: Women Redefining Leadership in Sports.” https://support.goodsports.org/event/changing-the-game-women-redefining-leadership-in-sports/e504675

In this issue of Sports Doing Good, I am including one of the very best stories I have read in more than 12 years of doing this. “For gamers with quadriplegia, team means everything,” from ESPN brings attention to some incredible individuals finding joy and meaning in esports, forming a team much like other great athletes in other sports. There was so much that moved me in this piece, including the fact that these individuals don’t live too far from me. I don’t know but that proximity made the story even more real.

There are several other stories this week which touch upon second chances, or first chances that heretofore weren’t seen as possible. Those stories are: “After a life-changing diagnosis, this Frenchman is embracing his ‘second chance at life;’” “AT&T and Gallaudet University unveil a football helmet for deaf and hard of hearing quarterbacks;” “Using technology to open up wilderness trails to people with disabilities;” and “An all-girls cricket team in India breaks with tradition.” Oh yeah, don’t forget the story about Simone Biles and her comeback.

I want to finish with a great sports experience I was a part of today, the New York City Marathon. (Did I run? Of course not!) But I was one of hundreds of thousands of others who cheered on more than 50,000 very brave souls who took to the streets of this great city. I had a friend running and was tracking her progress and was elated to see her near mile 23 to give her a great big hug. Most of the sports teams I follow don’t win that often but seeing a friend of 35 years pushing herself to once again finish the marathon is definitely one of the best sports experiences I have ever had. Kudos to her and everyone who started the race today. Sure, we celebrate the winners of the race, and those who finished, no matter their times. However, a shout out goes to everyone who just started the race today. Even if they did not finish, I am pretty sure they ran at least a couple marathons-worth of miles in their training. And that is worthy of adulation as well.
