Introduction
The next eight years or so are going to be ripe with mega sports events in the United States. Starting with what is likely to be the biggest and most well-attended World Cup ever, in 2026 (hosting along with Canada and Mexico), we will have the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028, along with the Women’s World Cup in 2031, Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033, and then the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2034. So yes, we will have multiple opportunities to join together as the human race to watch and celebrate the world’s best athletes. It should be fun.
Interestingly, it is not only the actual tournaments that are/will be compelling, it is also the process teams from all over the world, the biggest and the smallest, go through to qualify for the tournaments. This week we got a taste of how amazingly powerful such opportunities are and how people come together to celebrate not only the destination, but the journey. There are two articles and two videos that help tell such a story. “This Scrappy Soccer Team Has a Chance at Making the World Cup,” in the New York Times, “Curaçao, the smallest nation in World Cup history, just shocked the soccer world,” at Yahoo Sports, along with two entries in the video section above (Ireland and Scotland).
Let’s be clear, none of these four teams actually have a good chance to win the World Cup next year (I’d love to be wrong.). But they were all fighting for the chance to get there. THAT, is victory in and of itself. Football is the world’s sport and if you seemingly share nothing with another person, there is a good chance you are both “footy” fans and can appreciate and smile when a team takes one step closer to being a World Cup entrant. That is definitely sports doing good in action.

Our Website
More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.
Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility, and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.
We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
