E60: Amputee Soccer and the healing of a nation

“E:60” is ESPN’s first prime-time newsmagazine featuring profiles, investigations and cutting-edge stories on emerging and established sports. The featured reporters are Jeremy Schaap, Lisa Salters, Tom Farrey, Rachel Nichols and Michael Smith.

I saw a video that moved me. Moved me from one end of the human behavior spectrum – violence, hate, manipulation – to the other end – empathy, courage, and perseverance. As a soccer player and fan watching this video, I found myself grateful for the opportunity to play with friends every week in a safe environment with modern facilities, all the while being healthy (at least relatively). And with all that I am fortunate to have, there is a kinship with these men who have suffered so tremendously, both physically of course, but certainly emotionally as well. They were caught in an unenviable situation – war – and suffered for it. But through the power of sport, and the beauty of soccer, they are seeking and even finding a new opportunity to capture what was taken from them…their hope, dignity and zest for life.

Thanks to E:60 for producing such a great piece. And yes, that is Nas, aka Escobar, Nasty Nas, narrating the piece. Kudos to his incredible work here.

Here is a preview of the piece. The full-length video can be seen at ESPN.com by clicking here.
