The Finish Line’s team effort for Haiti
Coverage of sports product retailer Finish Line’s multi-faceted approach to being part of the relief effort for Haiti. The company combined contributions from its charitable foundation, its customers, employees, and charitable partners. More than $200, 000 in cash and footwear altogether was projected to be raised.

Alive and Kicking in 2010
Story featuring the organization Alive and Kicking and its recent PR successes and new program launch, that is, to get 100,000 soccer balls to children in sub-Saharan African before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Tuesday, January 26

Help New Orleans win again
Highlighting of the new Facebook fundraising campaign by the folks at 9th Ward Field of Dreams in New Orleans. The team at 9th Ward is hoping to raise $750,000 more before Valentine’s day to open on the 5th anniversary of Katrina. They already raised over $1 million. The organization is trying to build a state-of-the art football field and track that will be enjoyed by all public schools and community members free of charge.

Reminder – February 3, 2010 is National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD)
NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the five premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women’s Law Center, and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

SFF – sports friends forever
Commentary on how sports, especially team sports, at its most basic level gives us the opportunity for shared activity, experiences, and memories. These bind us together as friends while we play and serve as a unifying force long after our days as active teammates are over. We then link to a story about Ohio State basketball teammates Larry Siegfried, Jerry Lucas, and John Havlicek and their reunion 50 years after winning a championship.

Many of the organizations are helping to address two outstanding problems – availability of playing space and formal, supervised after-school programs. The Foundation’s dollars behind its Footprint Fields program and its Soccer for Success program are aligned with those grantee organizations’ missions.
