Getting that degree – Part 1 – Ty Warren

Two stories today about athletes, the lure of money, and an unwavering commitment to education.

First is a story we saw at Matthew J. Darnell’s “Shutdown Corner” column at Yahoo! Sports. MJD highlights Ty Warren, a starting defensive tackle for the New England Patriots, who is heading back to his alma mater, Texas A&M, to complete his undergraduate degree. And he is doing despite the fact he will be foregoing a $250,000 bonus from the Patriots for participating in voluntary workouts.

In the interview with ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss, Ty says of his educational journey and his three kids, “I try to put the kids in the best educational system possible and I think there is something to be said for their father, who has been blessed to play in the NFL and do something he’s loved to do, going back and finishing what he started,” Warren said from the campus of Texas A&M. “In the big picture, I think it’s important for me to do what I’m doing. I can sacrifice that bonus for that.”
