Introduction
The idea of wearing a shirt to express one’s devotion to a player, team, or country is well-established. (Actually, we launched an apparel company last year based on that idea, Love Equals, www.loveequals.net) It is so well-established that sports shirts now are a huge part of the multi-billion dollar licensed goods industry.

Of course, when you wear a shirt expressing devotion to something, there may be those who will counter your allegiance with their own. Hopefully this is done in a friendly way but sometimes that does not happen. This week a story came out of a young boy in Florida who wanted to showcase his loyalty to the University of Tennessee. He was not able to find a suitable shirt, so he created his own. Some schoolmates took that to be an opportunity to bully him about the crude nature of his design. Seeing her student distraught, his teacher reached out to her network, including on Facebook, to see if she could get her student a shirt. The story went viral and UT fans from all over the world were sending notes and swag his way. It got so good that the University itself offered to make his design an official one of the school, with part of the proceeds of the sale of the shirts going to an anti-bullying campaign. Certainly a good story we wanted to feature.

The other stories we are happy to feature this week include: New York Yankee player and super teammate Cameron Maybin; NBA half-time phenom Red Panda; how the Dream Team in 1992 spurred on the global popularity of basketball and the NBA; Tanya Muzinda, a 15-year old motocross rider challenging the male-dominated world of motocross; takeaways from the recently completed compelling U.S. Open tennis championship; a rugby club in Japan that champions a lifelong commitment to sport and health; WNBA superstar, and part-time broadcaster, Candace Parker; another WNBA superstar, and WNBAPA president, Nneka Ogwumike; and an effort between the WWE and 2K and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to raise money to advance blood cancer research and treatment.

More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.

Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.

We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
