Introduction
There are no restrictions for me when it comes to including stories in the newsletter, other than the stories involving something “good,” of course. But no limit on subject matter, place, time (mostly focused on the present, honestly), and certainly no restriction on location. The world is a “good” place and I love finding stories that broaden my perspective on sports.
This week we include stories that involve the NBA and India, the NFL’s first major foray into Europe (with the World League in 1991), English Premier league team Arsenal, a U.S. based owner of an English football team, and a young footballer from the U.S. getting his chance to shine in Scotland.
Sports are very much local and global, simultaneously. That is one of its special characteristics. We can claim ownership of our local team(s), e.g., New York Knicks, New York Mets, but also find community with fans in Japan who may also cheer for Real Madrid or Barcelona.
This local/global trait is a strength for sports and something that should be cultivated. It’s fine that the NBA is driven by business interests in India, if it is also helping to build the sport at the grassroots level around the country. It is a give and take, and that makes sense. When we lose sight of that and it mostly is about the “take,” we miss out on witnessing the ways sports can really impact the world.
2022 is going to be a “global” year with the Winter Olympics taking place in Beijing next month and the FIFA World Cup taking place in the latter part of the year. I encourage you to tune into those events to see athletes from all around the world compete for individual and national glory. That is something that makes sports more than good. It makes them great.

Our Website
More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.
Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility, and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.
We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
