Introduction
The business of sport is a globally relevant enterprise. Teams around the world in a variety of sports are bringing their respective fans immense joy (sometimes bringing immense heartache for sure) and new stories about great players and great plays are being etched. One such story is included in this week’s newsletter, “Ipswich Town celebrate remarkable promotion to Premier League.”
For those not familiar with the idea of promotion and relegation, it is hard to truly appreciate the feeling that fans from a promoted team (or the opposite) will have. Imagine that promotion happened twice in two years, taking their fans on a journey that only seemed possible in a dream. Ipswich Town is a story of a team with some wonderful history, but also some too-familiar heartache. But it seemed that their fans, including one Mr. Ed Sheeran, held hope for better days. Well, those days are here.
There are familiar points made when folks talk about the phenomena of promotion/relegation and its potential in the U.S. For the most part, no one thinks it will happen here, at least not in any of the major leagues. The uncertainty of a team’s position in a league is too much of a risk for a team to bear, especially if they spent millions/billions to become a brand-new team in the league. For our teams’ owners and their fans, no matter how bad the season, they will stay in the top league. There is some comfort in that, even if that comfort comes at the expense of the bewildering excitement and joy for a team’s downtrodden fan base who just was promoted. Either way, achieving long-held goals and wishes is a special moment for all involved, especially the fans. (just ask the Minnesota Timberwolves!)

Our Website
More About Us
Our goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other media that showcase the good in sports and society. We aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports- related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarizing, biased, and quite annoying. We are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good, with a focus on sports.
Our mission is to have Sport Doing Good be a consistent, and significant, contributor to the areas of sports, social responsibility, and development. We look forward to partnering with other stakeholders in producing content, in creating and/or sponsoring athletic and service events, knowledge sharing, and conferences/seminars, and even having a commercial arm that could be the source of innovative social businesses.
We invite you to send in news, press releases, and guest pieces for possible publication, and email us with suggestions about the content and format of the newsletter and Sports Doing Good website.
