There are so many positive feelings I get from doing the Sports Doing Good Newsletter. It has been more than 8 years and I still get inspired and encouraged and excited by the stories I come across. But fist-pumping joy? Yeah, it has happened, but I don’t really expect it since it is pretty rare. Well, this week, I did pump my fist and yell out “Yes!” when I saw that breakdancing was added to the program for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Was I a breaker? Nooooo. Not by a longshot. By I loved watching it, and to see it develop, like rap music, from its roots in New York City to the streets of Tokyo, Paris, Rome, and Bangkok was a thrill. I never saw it as cultural appropriation. This was cultural adulation, and it is to be celebrated. And I hope to be there in Paris when it debuts. Oh, one more thing, especially for those who are overseeing the sport in 2024, you MUST allow the performers to bring their own DJ’s and entourages. You don’t have to give all of them medals, but without the amazing music and hype posse, we won’t get the true essence of this brilliant form of expression. Check out some examples at https://youtu.be/1c8eKUlFbhk. Finally, we want to remind you of the great articles and videos we include in our 10+ section and video section. The stories in 10+ usually come from some of our long-time friends at Sport and Dev, Beyond Sport, Peace and Sport, Up2Us Sports, The Players’ Tribune and others. And the videos give you another way to consume wonderfully inspiring and informative stories. We have all of that this week so I hope you will take a chance to look at them all. Please continue to send along your stories. You’re both our audience and best source of stories. Our Twitter handle is @sportsdoinggood, and you can find us at www.facebook.com/sportsdoinggood and on Instagram. Finally, if you think others would like to receive the newsletter, please feel free to forward it on or have them contact us directly at sab@sportsdoinggood.com.
