Introduction

I want to start off by referencing my day job, that is of a professor and chairperson in the Sport Management Department at Farmingdale State College (FSC). I am currently in my 11th year at FSC and have very much enjoyed working with wonderful students, faculty and staff alike. My focus, ultimately, is on those students, not only during their time at FSC, but afterwards as well.
Getting a job in sports, and a host of other industries, is tough. Not only do you have to have the right qualifications, there needs to be jobs open, and you need a little luck to be applying when the need is there. With that in mind, I would like to ask those of you who are at companies and organizations that may be looking for quality young people, to let me know and I can try to steer students your way. Believe me, I can’t turn into a full-time recruiter and job matchmaker. However, I can try to help the supply and demand sides of the job equation so that everyone benefits. If you want to send contact information for your HR department instead, that is just as good. Regarding job opportunities that exist or may be coming up, please feel free to email me at sab@sportsdoinggood.com or singhs@farmingdale.edu. Thanks. Most of the articles I feature each issue in the Sports Doing Good newsletter are articles that highlight current news and activity. Occasionally, there is a current article which has an historical angle to it. For example, this week, upon the passing of baseball legend Mr. Henry Aaron, I include an article in which we learn about his life and his accomplishments during and after his career, as well as the major challenges he faced as a Black man in America. For the most part, I knew the story of this incredible man. But I am also including an article about an event that took place more than 50 years that I had no idea about. When I first read the article, I thought it was one of those “imagine if this happened” pieces. Well, the game did happen and what the game represented carried significance then and does all the way to today. I hope that you take a few minutes to read “The Greatest (Forgotten) Game Ever Played: MLB’s 1970 Exhibition to Honor MLK,” published by Sports Illustrated. And I hope that some media company gets a hold of a tape of the game and gives us a modern look at a legendary event. Please continue to send along your stories. You’re both our audience and best source of stories.
