Introduction

A regular theme that we feature in the newsletter is that of “trailblazing,” being the first or one of the first to do something, say something, be something. That glory of being recognized as a trailblazer has to be balanced at the challenges and obstacles that the trailblazer inevitably had to face. Some times that person does not even know during their lifetime that they had such an impact on society. This week we have a host of “doers,” those leading by example, trailblazing a path for others. We have Melissa Proctor, CMO for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks; Togethxr, a new media and commerce company founded by elite female athletes, including two-time World Cup champion Alex Morgan, four-time WNBA champion Sue Bird and Olympic gold medalists Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel; eSports executive, Johanna Faries, VP and Head of Leagues for Activision Blizzard; and heralded high school basketball player Azzi Fudd. But it is not just the ladies making their presence felt. Two of the stories involve HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), fertile ground for many of our country’s most accomplished leaders, who are seeing a resurgence both with respect to athletics and in the classroom. The stories of Tennessee State graduate and current Portland Trailblazer (there is that word again) and Chris Webber and his efforts at Morehouse College are certainly worth your time as well. Please continue to send along your stories. You’re both our audience and best source of stories.
