Introduction

As hard as it may seem, sports, as we have long thought of them, will return, admittedly with some alterations. And things will actually get better. We have seen signs of it with the NWSL having a terrific end-of-season tournament, the NBA bubble populated with some amazing performances, and various leagues taking on a more pronounced position when it comes to issues of importance to their players, fans, and other constituent partners. One story that I feature this week combines the realities of the negative impact of the pandemic but with a little bit of good news thrown in as well. I have been a fan of the World Baseball Classic from its inception in 2006. I loved the idea of an effort trying to highlight the excellence of a sport while also growing the game on a global basis. Well, instead of seeing the WBC in 2021 as scheduled, the event is being moved to 2023. While the delay is disappointing, the fact that the tournament will now feature 20 teams versus 16 in 2017 is promising. More teams brings more attention to the sport in different parts of the world, planting the seed for development at the elite level and maybe even more importantly, at the youth level. The other stories I am happy to feature include: ideas to help the sports world come out of this major interruption better than before; emerging U.S. soccer star Chris Richards and his journey to Germany; the incredibly rare story of a non-baseball playing Olympian ending up in Major League Baseball; how Nike and women’s pro soccer player Carson Pickett partnered up to create revolutionary soccer cleats; apparel brand Tracksmith and its unique fellowship program in support of running-related art; New York Mets superstar Pete Alsonso and his battle to become a professional baseball player; Naomi and Mari Osaka on fashion in tennis and their new charity face masks; a major, tangible contribution by Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Travis Kelce to STEM learning in his community; and an awesome move by skateboarding legend Tony Hawk to recognize Chris Weddle, another special, innovative athlete in his world.
